Cargill-supported forestry project in China awarded ‘golden status’ by the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance
Beijing - A Cargill-supported forestry project in Tengchong, Yunnan province was recently awarded ‘golden status’ by the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance. Cargill has provided extensive financial support, in the form of a USD 300,000 grant, to the project.
The project goals entail the reforestation with native tree species of 1,200 acres of land, as well as creating a sustainable livelihood program for the local communities and contributing to poverty alleviation in the region. This holistic approach to combating climate change gained the attention of The Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance, which constitutes a global partnership between research institutions, corporations and environmental groups.
“The project received the award because it highly satisfies fifteen key criteria which demonstrate the project will help mitigate climate change, conserve biodiversity, and improve socio-economic conditions for local communities. It is one of the first two projects in the world that have been approved using the CCB (climate community and biodiversity) standards.” said Ms. Anna van Paddenburg, Philanthropy Manager for TNC’s Nature Program in China, “This successful model will be used as a prototype for further reforestation projects across China.
